Seasonal Guide
What Fresh Fish to Buy in Saranda: June to September Guide
Peak tourist season in Saranda runs June to September — also when the fish is at its absolute best. The Ionian in summer has warmer shallows driving fish activity, larger catches, and the full range of species simultaneously available.
Month-by-month guide
June: Sardines come into excellent condition and stay through August. Sea bream reliably good. Butrint mussels at seasonal peak. Beginning of octopus season.
July: Peak sardine and anchovy season — most numerous, cheapest and best quality of the year. Shrimp available daily. Counter at its fullest variety.
August: Same as July with more visitor demand. Get to the counter early for best selection — by 11 AM the most prized whole fish may be gone.
September: Often the best month. Slightly cooler water, fewer tourists, fish in exceptional condition after the warm summer. Octopus becomes larger, sea bream flavour deepens.
