Saranda Fish Market: What the Locals Actually Do
Saranda does not have a fish market in the conventional sense — no early morning covered hall, no stalls with signs. What it has is fish counters: shops that buy directly from the boats and sell across a counter, the way a butcher sells meat.
When locals want fresh fish they go to a fish counter, usually before noon. They do not go to the seafront restaurants.
The fish counter routine
A typical local purchase: walk in, look at what's on ice, ask the price, pick the fish, watch it be weighed, pay. Five to ten minutes total. The fishmonger tells you honestly what's particularly good today — a service they provide because they buy from the boats and have a direct interest in you coming back.
How prices work
Prices at Fish Shop Ardit are by the kilogram, the same for everyone. There is no tourist price and local price. The counter price is the price.
Morning vs. evening
Morning (8:30 AM - 1 PM): full selection, everything very fresh. Evening (7-10 PM): reduced selection but potential deals on remaining stock. All stock is same-day — nothing carries over to tomorrow.
