Seafood Near Butrint Archaeological Park: The Mussels Worth the Trip

Butrint National Park is one of Albania's most visited sites — Greek and Roman ruins overlooking the lagoon, UNESCO World Heritage status, a genuinely beautiful setting. Most visitors come for the archaeology. Some leave having discovered the lagoon next to the ruins produces the best mussels they have ever eaten.

The Butrint lagoon as a shellfish environment

The lagoon is fed by freshwater springs and connected to the Ionian Sea through a narrow channel. The brackish environment is ideal for mussel cultivation. The surrounding national park means no industrial or agricultural runoff. Water quality is exceptional.

Butrint mussels are larger than standard farmed mussels, sweeter, and with a cleaner flavour. Italian visitors consistently describe them as superior to what they buy at home. One of the genuinely world-class shellfish products of the Mediterranean.

Getting Butrint mussels

The easiest way: Fish Shop Ardit in Saranda, which stocks them as net bags (1-2 kg) when available — most of the year. Price: 200-350 ALL per kg.

A practical day trip combination

Visit Butrint in the morning (2-3 hours), drive back via Saranda, stop at Fish Shop Ardit for mussels and whatever else looks good, return to your villa in Ksamil or Saranda for a late lunch.
