Fresh Fish Along the Albanian Riviera: Saranda as the Best Base
The Albanian Riviera runs roughly 100 kilometres of coastline from the Greek border north to Dhermiu. It is one of the least developed stretches of European Mediterranean coast — and that underdevelopment is precisely what makes the seafood so good.
Why Saranda has the best fish supply
Saranda is the largest city on the Albanian Riviera. It has the biggest daily fish market, most direct access to local boats, and infrastructure to move fish from water to counter in the shortest time. Ksamil has some fish but its supply depends partly on Saranda. Smaller villages have even less.
The Ionian advantage
The Ionian Sea off the Albanian coast is colder than the Adriatic, cleaner than much of the western Mediterranean, and substantially less fished. The combination produces fish with firmer flesh, brighter colour and longer shelf life than comparable Atlantic or western Mediterranean fish.
This is the reason Italian tourists, who have access to perfectly good Adriatic fish at home, drive to Saranda specifically to eat the local seafood. The difference is real and noticeable.
What to buy where
- Saranda: Full daily counter — sea bream, sea bass, octopus, mussels, shrimp, sardines, red mullet
- Ksamil: Small local market some mornings, limited selection
- Butrint area: Mussels from the lagoon — world-class quality
- Himara: Some local fish, smaller selection than Saranda
